Understanding God’s Love

May 4, 2016 | Devotionals

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since I was little, I have heard that God loves me and died for my sins. Sadly, as I got older and was given more freedom, that wasn’t enough for me to choose God over the world. The reality is I never understood how God loved me when what I really deserved was the opposite of love. So what made the difference?

You see, at the root of us trying to love is sin, but the root of God’s love is true love. It is the best example of how we are supposed to love others.

Ten years ago, it set in what a big sinner I really am. The Holy Spirit has continued to convict me of my sin, how I blow it every day, and how impossible it is for me to love others like Jesus has loved me. When someone else does something to upset me, I react and want to give them what they deserve (Matthew 5:46). However, Jesus doesn’t give me what I deserve. He gives me all He has while I spit in his face (Romans 8:17). I struggle to love others that way, yet my appreciation for what God has done for me continues to grow.

Challenge

Don’t you see the sin all around you in the world?
Do you think you are a good person or do you see how often you really do sin?
Do you ever confess that sin to a brother or sister in Christ, a family member or spouse?
