Welcome, Alie!

Written by Josh Stock
on August 26, 2020 in Uncategorized

It gives us immense pleasure to finally announce the arrival of Alie Heenan to the SFC Support Office. Alie has been clearly called by the Lord to come and serve our global community of snowboarders and skiers being the light of Jesus across the globe…seriously, why else would she come and work with a bunch of dirty, Jesus-loving snowboard dudes unless she was called by God to do so?! Haha.

Alie’s background is in Operations, and her skillset will bring a welcome level of organization to our work. Alie brings a new, diverse voice (and a really chipper attitude) to our now 6-person support office team. In her first week on the job, we enjoyed digging deep into our office structure, some of our systems that need work and also welcoming her with a steady stream of puns and practical jokes. Naturally.

You will be hearing about Alie and hearing from Alie in the coming days. She’s an amazing human with a passion to build up more people to share Jesus in our dark culture, so she’s ONE OF US at her core. Please welcome Alie to the team with us!

To welcome Alie personally, send her an email at [email protected].

The First Ever Unified Prayer Effort for the Shred World

Written by Josh Stock
on August 21, 2019 in News

Within our small but global network of snowboarders and skiers for Christ, there is a heart of grace and love for our dark and broken culture. We can each only do so much, BUT the good news is that we know someone who has the power and the plan to bring restoration.

We believe prayer is extremely significant in this effort to be the light of Jesus within our culture. One of our core values is Believing: “together we pursue a lifestyle of PRAYER and worship…”

When our small staff and Board was handed the honor and privilege of serving the global SFC network in 2013, we knew we had a responsibility to PRAYERFULLY handle this global vision. We set a goal. We decided to pray and pray strategically. So, we began collecting data. We rallied our leaders at conferences and retreats to help us prayerfully compile the data, and when the dust settled, we had compiled and created the world’s first-ever “SHREDDABLE NATIONS PRAYER GUIDE” (Click to download the PDF).

There are 70 nations around the globe that we’ve researched and considered “shreddable” (meaning they can be skied in and are able to contain some sort of ski and snowboard culture). The Shreddable Nations Prayer Guide contains information on both the current spiritual climate as well as the ski culture in each of these 70 nations. Since completing the guide in 2017, we have begun and completed our first round of the Shreddable Nations Prayer Guide Global Prayer Initiative. Each week for 70 weeks, we focused on one nation per week and encouraged our global community to pray for those skiers and snowboarders through the included prayer points.

We are grateful and blessed to have completed the first 70-week Shreddable Nations Prayer Guide Global Prayer Initiative in May 2019! (If you missed it here’s a LINK)

WHAT NOW? We continue to compile contacts and more specific prayer requests for each country as the effort increases. We plan to restart the 70-week initiative again in September 2019, because we deeply believe in the power of prayer and will remain committed to praying for God’s continued harvest amongst every shreddable nation.

If you want to join us in prayer, please remember that every major, historical movement of the Spirit of God BEGAN IN PRAYER. Sign up below to join us in this effort to see the light of Jesus shining in every one of the 70 shreddable nations of the world!

Shine bright!

T.I.M.E. Travel Teams launching globally!

Written by Josh Stock
on January 23, 2018 in News

“What is T.I.M.E. Travel,” you ask?

“What does a T.I.M.E. Travel Team look like?”

Woah, easy there. Slow down with all the questions.

Where to start? Hmm, oh, I see. In the beginning… Wait! That’s been done before…

Years ago, God moved in the hearts of some snowboarders and skiers to BE THE LIGHT OF JESUS WITHIN THEIR SKI TOWN. They immediately saw positive effects from living selfless lifestyles within a selfish culture. They realized how monumental this sort of behavior could be when applied across the ski/snowboard culture in different towns just like theirs around the world. Before they even knew what happened, a beautifully extraordinary thing began to occur. As they prayed, there began to surface a number of people in different locations around the world who were also hearing this calling from the Creator of everything— God had begun to move, and these snowboarders and skiers began to visit one another to hear the stories of others and share their own stories. The process did two things: a) it VALIDATED GOD’S CALLING for each individual to BE THE LIGHT OF JESUS WITHIN THE SKI and SNOWBOARD CULTURE, and b) it gave an opportunity for God to ENCOURAGE everyone involved (those people traveling, those people being, visited and/or anyone within earshot of the post-travel stories of God’s handiwork).

Some of the people who had been traveling around, hearing and sharing these stories, thought, “We need to do more of this.” They did more traveling and listening and sharing until eventually they thought, “This can’t just be US doing this MORE OFTEN. It has to become MORE of us DOING this together.” The idea for the T.I.M.E. Travel Team was birthed out of necessity to:

TALK with other shred folk and church folk who share the calling to BE THE LIGHT OF JESUS WITHIN THE SKI and SNOWBOARD CULTURE,

INVEST into individuals and communities who have heard the calling and are acting upon it,

MENTOR those individuals in other communities as well as
fellow travelers on-the-go, and

ENCOURAGE people by listening to their stories and sharing personal stories of God’s goodness.

To train as a T.I.M.E. Traveler, follow this link for the CLASSIFIED document…but do so with great caution! This mission to Talk, Invest, Mentor & Encourage in shred towns across the world is NOT for the faint of heart.

The Shreddable Nations Prayer Guide is fully operational!

Written by Josh Stock
on January 17, 2018 in News

During the 2015 SFC International Conference on the Dachstein glacier in Austria, it was so rainy and foggy that they closed the glacier for the duration of our conference. Our scheduled plans for spring-glacier-shredding were a bust. However, God’s plans to begin a prayer revolution were a GO!

We used our newly acquired time together to start praying. We gathered statistics from ski industry researchers for every skiable nation in the world. We then combined some of those SKI statistics with RELIGIOUS statistics we had gathered from world missions organizations focused on “missional prayer”.

These were the humble (and seemingly accidental) beginnings of The Shreddable Nations Prayer Guide: a combination of statistics on the SKI CLIMATE and SPIRITUAL CLIMATE of the world’s 70 “shreddable nations”.

Starting in 2018, we will launch a prayer effort for one country each week, because we believe in the power of prayer and in God’s heart for Jesus to be known in every nation of the world. We are praying to see God raise up HIS CHILDREN OF LIGHT at every ski area in every country with a ski/snowboard culture present.

Follow our weekly prayer postings on Instagram or Facebook.

Will YOU join us in praying that God would raise up His people to BE THE LIGHT OF JESUS IN THE SHRED CULTURE in every shreddable nation of the world?

This past August, we traveled to Christchurch, New Zealand. We gathered many of the founders and key leaders of the SFC movement to 1) Recognize them for their efforts, to facilitate them in 2) Remembering and 3) Retelling their stories together. We documented it all in order to 4) Relate their successes and failures to the current leaders of the worldwide SFC movement today (as well as for the leaders of future generations).

We are very proud of this monumental effort to preserve the past, solidify our history up to the present and maintain our course for the future of SFC! This film (the capturing, documenting and retelling of our founders’ stories) will serve as a Missional Anchor for SFC, so that future efforts won’t drift too far from those of the original founders. This is the retelling of the early development of the movement…according to the memories of the founders. These are their memories of twentyish years ago…in twenty-ish minutes.

Mission Down Under II

Written by Josh Stock
on April 26, 2017 in News

My great friend and partner in T.I.M.E., Taylor Brant is the newest FULL-TIME staffer with Snowboarders & Skiers For Christ. Taylor has proven himself to be one of the most valuable volunteers we’ve ever seen with his work in Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ, Australia/New Zealand the past two years.

Taylor is also singlehandedly responsible for our social media strength. The story of God getting a hold of His life will leave no doubt in your mind that God has amazing things planned for him.

We believe in Taylor and the plan God has for him. It’s our hope for him as a fellow full-time missionary that we would see him fully supported and ministering full-time in the next few months. If you believe in the mission God has Taylor on, please pray about supporting him in prayer and financial support. If you’re available, you would be blessed to watch his recap movie from the past year down under.

Taylor is the man!

Meat Hondo

Written by Josh Stock
on December 30, 2016 in News

I’m Josh, but I want you to meet my good friend, Hondo Wynn, and let me quickly get to the POINT.

If you haven’t met Hondo yet, boy howdy, you’re missing out! He’s unique. Twisted even, but not real twisted, just kind of a friendly goofball… “twisted” more like a PRETZEL than a twizzler. You know?

Anyway, to keep a long story short, Hondo and I were first introduced via email and the intro went something to the tune of: “Hondo is some dude I know from Big Bear who is a full-time missionary in a place called Slovenia…it’s a country somewhere in EUROPE, I think.”

I finally got to MEAT with Hondo face-to-face when we landed with a crew of 6 snowboarding/skiing missionaries (who were in for quite the surprising whirlwind-four-day-tour of the ski resorts of Slovenia).

And when I say “tour” I don’t mean luxury stroll. I mean more like expedited-chain-gang-work-week! Haha, we pulled a non-stop “shovel-shred-teach-preach” schedule for four exhausting days. Haha, time with Hondo will (almost guaranteed) put you in a pickle of an uncomfortable spot or two. And of course I mean the “good for you” kind of UNCOMFORTABLE spots – like your grandfather’s endless chores that “help you build character.”

Hondo has “tenacity” and “drive” like I’ve seen in few individuals I’ve ever met. He’s also got a keen ability to relate and communicate to people from a myriad of BACKGROUNDS.

If one thing can be said for Hondo Wynn, it’s that he has a voracious appetite…for Balkan MEAT plates, yes of course…

But more so, Hondo has a voracious appetite for Kingdom Building, disciple-making and BRIDGE-building with shred kids. He’s particularly passionate in pushing into regions untrodden to bring the light of Jesus.

I have been one of the lucky ones to have witnessed Hondo’s enthusiasm, intentionality and PRAYERFUL passion and to have been inspired by it first hand.

I introduce you to Hondo for this reason, Hondo has just become the new:

Interim SFC Europe Coordinator” and that’s our fancy little title that means he’ll be the go-to-guy on the ground in Europe for current SFC leaders and potential new SFC communities. He’ll also be coordinating trips to VISIT chapters and fellow-shred missionaries around Europe.

He’ll essentially be wearing one or two of the HATS I have been trying to wear (and he’ll be doing it from within Europe instead of me doing it from across the pond) in visiting/encouraging/seeking to unite leaders across the Alps.

Despite being an American, Hondo has gained amazing credibility with the Euros over his last half dozen or so years of investing time, energy, prayer and other resources. We are calling him the “interim” because the plan is to find and train a future full-time European SFC Director over the next few years, and Hondo has the HEART and capacity to help lead this endeavor.

So, congratulate Hondo. Thank him for his commitment and dedication to BEING THE LIGHT OF JESUS IN THE SHRED CULTURE! Give him a virtual pat on the back. Take your photo with him. Follow him into a sketchy-looking TREELINE. He’s a Legend!

And if you have ideas, feel free to contact Hondo at his new email address: [email protected] and brainstorm together. The shred culture in Europe is the largest in the world. The need is great. We want to honor and appreciate all those pushing forward there with the Vision!

2016 Euro Gathering

Written by Josh Stock
on October 21, 2016 in News

So for the second year in a row, our friends at SRS Team Extreme will host an “early season SFC/SRS gathering” for our European leaders. Our SFC leaders will lead worship sessions, story-sharing-sessions, morning devotionals and strategic ministry planning workshops.

Josh will travel to England on November 2nd and visit with the SFC U.K. leadership team for a snowdome “board” meeting. Then the plan is to rent a van to pick up some leaders and road trip to and from the conference on the Dachstein glacier at Ramsau, Austria. This is where we held the SFC International conference May 2015, and the fog and high winds then kept us off the glacier the whole week, so PLEASE PRAY FOR BETTER WEATHER THIS TIME.

More info on the gathering HERE:

Please also keep the SFC/SRS/Lighthouse leaders across Europe in your prayers as they gather together to plan a winter’s worth of ministry. Pray for reception to the Holy Spirit’s still small voice and that the presence of the Father would be encountering people throughout this weekend.

How was your sabbatical anyway?

Written by Josh Stock
on August 28, 2016 in News

Sabbatical Goals

Before starting my sabbatical, I was asked what my master plan was going to be for the sabbatical. I responded that I had no idea what a sabbatical was, but I wanted to 1.) spend more time with my family(and disconnected from social media) 2.) spend more time praying and 3.) spend more time in the Word.

Cambria checks out the rainy weather.

Resting through the Restlessness

We sat at home during a typically snowy/muddy/miserable Copper Mountain May, and I’ve never felt cabin fever so much in my whole life. The full stop on emails/social media/work travel was terribly unnerving for me. I began journaling during this time as well, and I discovered some ugly things lurking in my heart that I knew I had to let the Lord deal with. In June, I took the family to Australia for five weeks of relaxation and rejuvenation before coming back to the east coast to visit our relatives.

Returning Refreshed

Since returning from the sabbatical, I feel better spiritually, physically and mentally. I’ve been told my sermons are better. Haha. I’ve felt more excited about some of the big picture stuff we’ve been wrestling through in the office. In hindsight, I’m positive that I’ve been a bit uprooted from the busyness-of-putting-out-proverbial-fires cycle that I had fallen into and replanted next to streams of living water. My intentional time in the Word and prayer has been what my roots have needed. There are some new personal boundaries we’ve set as a family (in regards to my travel time on the road as well as our time spent hosting people in our home), some new motivation to reinstitute a weekly sabbath for our family and a bit more pep in my step since my return. I’m so grateful for the time of learning and growing. Thank you immensely to all those who helped force me to take the full stop in order to reset.

Update from SFC Australia and New Zealand

Written by Josh Stock
on August 19, 2016 in News

SFC Australia

This year, SFC Australia Ministry continues to be well received by the entire Jindabyne/Perisher community and has already seen a huge impact in the community during the first half of the season. The team of Jess, Brenno, Jai, Felix, and Luca has been a huge to assist to Taylor while supporting the SFC Australia movement.

This year, SFC volunteers at the op shop, Day and Night, serve the local community through making contacts/friendships with the local Jindabyne ski/snowboard community and meeting the local shred scene. The SFC Op Shop Night has consistently fed over 100 people each week. It’s a place where people get a meal and feel welcomed by God’s love. SFC also hosted a movie night at Alpine Adventist to share the Good News and SFC’s mission and vision. They are planning to run the same movie night at the local beach’s burrito bar. Monday nights, the SFC meets for a LifeGroup/ Weekly Winter Word Bible study. It has been a great way to grow, pray, and encourage each other.

The team looks forward to what God has in store for the rest of the season and expects God to continue to do big things! Big thank you to the SFC Jindy Family team and OP Shop at the Alpine Uniting Church for their faithfulness and love for the community in Jindabyne.

SFC Australia in Victoria Mountains

Rissa Davies, 16 years old, felt God urging her to race boards as an olympian and become a light on the hill in the competition scene. The Davies family and Cat Farmer, have a heart to see an active SFC presence at Mt Buller, Falls Creek, and Mt Hotham. They have entered a crazy journey of having to trust God for his provision for places to stay and funds to compete. They continue to see Him provide in increasing measure.

SFC New Zealand/YWAM Queenstown SDTS

SFC got to spend the week encouraging the students and staff at YWAM Queenstown Snowboard/Ski Discipleship Training School. SFC started in New Zealand in 1997, and it breaks our hearts that there are currently no active chapters in New Zealand. Inspiring the younger generation is so important. They now know opportunities to do SFC exist around the world. Many of the students were very interested in joining the SFC movement when they graduate from DTS. SFC was able to share the vision and mission to bridge the lost to Jesus in the shred culture to the SDTS crew, SFC contacts in New Zealand, and the local churches.

Cameron Haylock in Christchurch has a heart to do SFC at Mt Hutt and Alyssa & Christian from YWAM Queenstown can see doing a SFC Community night on Mondays. Please keep SFC New Zealand in your prayers that a team will step up to lead the SFC movement back into Queenstown, Wanaka, and Christchurch.

Prayers Requests

– For the SFC Australia team (Taylor, Jess, Brendan, Alan, Jai, Felix, Luca, Cat, Pete & Larissa) that they will hold each other accountable and stay safe on mountain. Please pray for their work volunteering at the op shop and church, discipling new friends, and evangelising to the community.

– For people to continue to join the SFC Lifegroup Weekly Winter Word on Mondays

– For building relationships with Perisher, Thredbo, and Victoria Media contacts.

– For upcoming outreach events.

– For snow.

– For possible baptisms.

– For more people to start a relationship with Jesus.

– For the YWAM SDTS students to have heart to do SFC.

– For Rebecca Banning, a new SFC Australia volunteer from USA, arriving August.

– For new leaders to step up to run SFC New Zealand.

Cheers Bigears!
